What Technology Means To Me!

Why do I love technology and what does it mean to me?

Technology, to put it simply, is awesome. I grew up with it and it is truly remarkable how technology has advanced over the past 30 years. What will technology be like 30 years from now?

I may as well have been using technology from the day I was born. I don’t actually remember when I first started learning about it or when I used it for the very first time, it is just something I’ve always just known, how to use it and what it is all about.

Technology can, but certainly doesn’t always, make our life simpler. We use calculators and computers to solve our mathematical problems instead of grabbing a piece of paper and a pen, carrying the 2 and moving the decimal point etc.; technology does it for us and saves us a lot of time in the process.

In everyday life we have technologically advanced cars with audio cues and GPS. We have smartphones, the internet, laptops, tablets and TVs. Let’s not forget about traffic signals, telephone networks, space technologies, interactive whiteboards in our classrooms, video-conferencing, transport, medical devices and so much more. We are surrounded by technology every day. Technology is evolving on a daily basis and who knows where technology will lead us and what we will be using it for in the future.

Here are a few of my personal favourite technologies that I use daily.

Smartphone
I love my smartphone, keeping in contact with family and friends via SMS, chat and calls, oh and of course social media. It’s great to look things up when you’re out and about (you’ve got to love Google). I love taking photos on my phone instead of carrying my big camera around. But my music player is my all-time favourite feature. I can’t go anywhere without music, and my phone stores thousands of songs that I can update anywhere, any time.

Internet – Who doesn’t love the internet?!
Considering part of my job is to develop websites, I am obligated to like the internet. The internet is an amazing tool to connect with people interstate and overseas (or simply the person down the street). It is great for research and educating yourself, and others, about an endless number of topics. Although, you do need to be wary of the accuracy of a lot of content, as you can’t believe everything you read or watch on the internet.

Tablet
Whether I’m using an iPad or an alternative tablet, it’s fantastic. I use it for work, to play games and use the internet. My children use it for homework with special programs for reading and maths. It is a great tool to have.

GPS
I can read a map, but I’ll be the first to admit that navigation is not one of my best skills (just ask my husband). It’s great to enter my destination and my GPS (car or smartphone) will lead me to where I need to go. Fantastic!

In conclusion, technology for me has more pros than cons. I use it every day. I work in the IT industry and so I need to know how to use technology, what to expect from it and have at least some idea of how it might evolve in the future so I can continue with my career. However, I am also a strong believer in still using pen and paper and not relying on technology for everything. So yes, it has it’s pros and cons, but all in all, there’s a time and a place for it, and that time does not extend to 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Sometimes we just need to get back to the basics and write, run around outside, soak up the sun, spend time with our families doing non-technological activities, and just talk to each other face-to-face.

What does technology mean to you?
