Content Management Systems

What is a Content Management System?

A Content Management System, or CMS, is a web application/program that enables users to create, publish and edit websites. Content Management Systems are especially useful for ‘non-technical’ users to update content on their website without relying on a third party, if time permits of course.

The majority of content updates can be easily implemented using the CMS WYSIQYG (What You See Is What You Get) interface. Your website can be updated anywhere in the world as long as you have a computer with an internet connection.

Why Do We Use WordPress?

WordPress is considered to be one of the most commonly used and accessible Content Management Systems available. WordPress is very flexible and provides developers with the ability to do almost anything.

The WordPress user and developer community is huge, enabling the development and support of an enormous library of templates, themes, shortcodes and plugins.

WordPress utilises standard compliance code, which is considered of high quality, and has been designed to be search engine friendly.

WordPress also supports a large range of media and file formats, security features, and is considered very safe and secure, making it a popular choice for websites handling important, personal and confidential information.

What About Other CMS?

WordPress is one of many Content Management Systems available, but Forerunner’s Digital Media Team is experienced in other CMS too. Other popular CMS include Drupal, Joomla and ModX. Each developer has their preferred system as each CMS has it’s own structure, method of doing things, and they obviously each have their strengths and weaknesses.

If you have an existing website built with another CMS, our Team would be more than happy to discuss your options for maintenance, an upgrade or converting to a different CMS.

Content Management System Maintenance

It is extremely important to maintain your website’s content management system software and plugins. By keeping them up-to-date, you will not only be using the latest versions and technologies, but you will also have the latest bug fixes and security patches, which helps protect your website.

Before performing any updates to your website, we also strongly recommend performing a backup in case something does not go to plan.

If you do not have the time, or you simply prefer someone else to maintain your website’s CMS, then Forerunner’s CMS Maintenance service is for you. This service provides constant monitoring of your website’s CMS and plugins. When updates are available, our Team will be notified and the updates performed and tested, giving you peace of mind that your website is always up-to-date.
