What is Chromecast and how did it come about?
We love tech at Forerunner and we especially love the Google Chromecast!
A Google Chromecast is a small device that connects to your TV via HDMI. Once connected, this allows you to stream video content on your TV.
The Chromecast was developed by Google in July 2013, at a cost of $35 US when it was released in the US. This was around the time that streaming from sources like Netflix started becoming popular overseas.
Since July 2013, Google has released two additional types of the Chromecast. In 2015, an audio-only version called “Chromecast Audio” was released which provides ability for audio streaming. A newer model of the traditional Chromecast called “Chromecast Ultra” was then released that caters for 4K streaming.
How much are these and where can they be purchased from?
These can be purchased from places like Office Works, JB Hi-Fi and Harvey Norman for around $57-$59.
What can a Chromecast be used for other than Netflix?
Along with Netflix, there are a variety of other apps you can stream from which include: Stan, YouTube, Google Play Movies & TV and Catch Up TV such as: ABC iView & Channel 9.
How is streaming done without a Chromecast?
There are a couple of different ways of streaming without using one of these handy devices. To give you a few ideas, these ways are the most common:
1) The first way of streaming is a laptop connected via HDMI.
In order to stream to your TV, without a Chromecast, you would need to plug a HDMI cable into your TV from your laptop. The Chromecast saves the hassle of having your laptop connected to the TV.
2) The second option used to stream are gaming consoles, also connected via HDMI.
These days, most gaming consoles like the traditional xBox have various apps like Netflix or YouTube installed, allowing you to utilise these devices for streaming.
So, how complicated is the Chromecast to setup?
Extremely simple!
Once you have un-boxed your Chromecast and plugged it into the HDMI port on your TV, and powered it on either by; plugging it into the USB port of your TV, or into the wall, you will need to switch your TV onto the HDMI source/channel. After switching to the HDMI channel source on your TV and downloading the Google Home app on your phone/ tablet, you will need to run through the setup of it. This handy guide from Google Support will give you an idea as to how easy this is to setup. Your Chromecast should also come with instructions.
Once you have the Chromecast connected to WiFi and have gone through the basics to set it up, you are free to stream!
How does streaming work?
There are various streaming networks around as mentioned above. Once you’ve signed up for any one of the other streaming services online, all you have to do is install the app on your smartphone or tablet and sign into your account that you created on signup. After signing in, you will see the range of TV shows/ movies to watch. You then use your phone or tablet to choose what you want to watch. You’ll then be able to select the Chromecast option on your device within the app and your chosen item will start steaming (or playing) on your TV.
